1994-95 MWC Women's Swimming Season in Review

The numbers keep rolling along. A 15th straight winning dual-meet season (7-2 overall). A fifth consecutive Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship. Three NCAA qualifiers, three All-Americans.

Head coach Matt Kinney is not one to rest on past laurels, however. A team which lost just two swimmers to graduation aims for higher goals, such as a first-ever Top 10 team finish at NCAA Division III Nationals. The return of individual All-Americans Megan Reese (Jr./ Virginia Beach, VA) and Sarah King (Sr./Lancaster, PA) will strengthen that quest. Reese earned CAC Swimmer of the Year honors after capturing the 200 and 400-yard individual medley at the conference championships. Reese then finished 11th and fifth, respectively, in those events to earn All-American honors at nationals. King - a four-time relay All-American as a freshman - placed 12th in the 100 backstroke at '95 nationals, after winning the 100 and 200 back at CACs. Gretchen Hurley (Sr./Loudonville, NY) won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at CACs, and also qualified for NCAA nationals. She was an Academic All-American in '95.

Other returning CAC champions are Eliza Barcus (Sr./Reston, VA; 500 and 1,650 free) and Liz Darcy (Sr./Brightwaters, NY; 200 free). All-Conference returnees include Charis Armstrong (So./Midlothian, VA), Jessica Green (So./Dahlgren, VA), Nancy McClain (Sr./New Fairfield, CI), Ginger Newnam (Jr./Danville, VA), Cynthia Owen (Jr./Chesterfield, VA) and Emily Williams (Jr./Afton, VA).

Both teams which defeated MWC in 1994-95 - Gettysburg and Division I Richmond - return on the '95-96 slate. According to Kinney, a strong schedule will help prepare the Eagles for a run to national prominence. 'This year's team is loaded with talent and depth," said Kinney. "If our swimmers tap into new levels of desire and commitment, there is no limit to what they can accomplish. This group is well positioned to make a significant impact on the national level in NCAA Division III."
