1988-89 Mary Washington College Women's Swimming Season in Review

A strong mixture of veterans and youth add to one of the finest teams in MWC women's swimming history. Paced by seniors Diana Sievers and junior Kristen Spencer - who have combined for 13 school records - the Eagles set several team goals, highlighted by a strong second place finish (behind NCAA Division I UNC-Charlotte) at the Atlantic States Swimming Championships and again qualifying swimmers for NCAA Division III Nationals.

Mary Washington finished the dual meet season with a 7-4 mark, with three of those losses coming to strong Division I opponents. Behind Sievers a premier sprint freestyler) and Spencer (a backstroke/IM specialist, who won seven events at the 1988 Atlantic States meet and an NCAA qualifier in the 100 backstroke in 1989), MWC could count on points and leadership at every meet.

The influence of the veterans quickly rubbed off on the younger swimmers, especially freshman Tammy Cakouros, who along with Spencer, Sievers, and Shannon Brown qualified for NCAA Nationals in the 400 medley relay with a school-record clocking of 4:12.68. Cakouros set the 100 breastsroke mark (1:11.67) at Atlantic States, while Brown was a consistent butterfly and IM performer in her sophomore season.

Junior Mary Whalen came on late in the season to become an outstanding sprint freestyler, including a school-record 25.32 in the 50 free at Atlantic States. Sophomores Stephanie Weekes and Laurie Johnson were solid contributors as well.
