Early Goals Lead UMW Women's Soccer Past Geneseo, 3-0, in NCAA Tournament 1st Round

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored  apair of goals in the opening 13 minutes of play en route to a 3-0 victory over SUNY Geneseo on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Geneva, N.Y. The Eagles, 12-10 on the season, advance to Sunday's second round against host William Smith College.

Senior Brielle Mitchell opened the scoring at 7:21 on an assist from freshman Mikaela O'Fallon to give the Eagles early momentum. At 12:48, Mitchell set up sophomore Abby Zimmerman for the Eagles' second score of the day, and the Eagles carried that momentum through halftime, with a 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles added a third tally in the 55th minute, as senior Malorie Joseph scored unassisted, to cap the scoring. The Eagle defense tightened, allowing just four second half shots, in the triumph.

Mary Washington led in shots, 12-8, and both teams drew five corner kicks. UMW goalkeeper Allison Nork made four saves in recording the shutout, while Julia mcDonald had three stops and Marissa Quimby one for Geneseo.

The Eagles will advance to Sunday's second round to face host William Smith College, who defeated Utica, 3-0, on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. The Eagles' win is their first advancement to the second round since 2004, and marks their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2003.
