UMW Women’s Soccer Tops SVU, 4-0, in CAC First Round

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team topped Southern Virginia University, 4-0, in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference postseason tournament. With the win, the Eagles will advance to the semifinals where they will take on Christopher Newport University on Wednesday evening. UMW improves to 9-10 on the season.

After defeating the Knights both times in the regular season, the Eagles came out ready to beat them for a third time. They poured on the shots early in the game to try and get on the board. Freshman Amanda Krest recorded the first goal of the game as Mikaela O'Fallon played her a ball past the defense and Krest finished past the goalie in the 18th minute.

UMW stayed on the attack seeking some insurance goals. With five minutes left in the half, the Eagles scored their second goal of the game. Corinne Carson crossed a ball in front of the net and Lindsey Hendrickson got her foot on the ball and put it in the back of the net to put UMW up 2-0.

The Eagles added to their lead early in the second half to pull away. Freshman Mikaela O'Fallon scored a goal as Brielle Mitchell played a long ball to her. O'Fallon took one shot, was stopped by the goalie, gathered the rebound and finished past the goalie to put the Eagles up 3-0 in the 48th minute.

Just five minutes later O'Fallon added her second goal of the game, this time unassisted. UMW held their 4-0 lead in the 53rd minute and managed to hold on from there. The Eagles' defense allowed just one shot on goal.

UMW outshot SVU, 25-1, and recorded 15 corner kicks. Allison Van Nork made one save in goal.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to CNU for the semifinals set for 5 p.m.
