UMW Women's Soccer Tops York, 2-1, to Gain 3rd Seed in CAC Tourney

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored a goal in each half to defeat York College of Pa., 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground in the regular season finale. The Eagles enter postseason play with an 8-10 overall record, and a 5-5 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference.

UMW jumped ahead at 16:40, as senior Brielle Mitchell scored on the Eagles' first shot, connecting from the top corner of the penalty area over the keeper's head inside the far post. The Eagles held the 1-0 advantage through halftime.

The Spartans knotted the score at 1-1 at 55:57 on an unassisted score, taking a volley off a shot that deflected off the crossbar and into goal. Four minutes later, junior Brooke Bauman scored off a long pass from freshman Mikaela O' Fallon and beating the keeper one-on-one for the eventual game winner.

The Eagles led in shots, 10-8, and York led in corner kicks, 6-4. UMW goalkeeper Allison Nork made four saves, while Cat McCarty made two saves for York.

The Eagles, with the win, gain the third seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, and will host sixth-seeded Southern Virginia University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the first round.
