UMW Women’s Soccer Tops Catholic, 2-0, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team topped Catholic University, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season.

In the early going, Catholic had an opportunity to put one in the back of the net just 6:45 in but the shot hit the post. The Eagles then came out firing shots and put one in the back of the net at the 17:45 mark. Lindsey Hendrickson played a ball over to Brielle Mitchell who took a touch and fired from outside of the box to put it in the back of the net and give UMW a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles kept up the attack and almost had another goal with just five minutes left as Corinne Carson and Abby Zimmerman both had shots saved by the goalie. UMW's defense held strong in the first half as they did not allow a single shot on goal.

Early in the second half, the Cardinals had two good looks at goal but were saved away by Freshman Aly Holden. In the 54th minute, Katherine Brady struck a ball from outside of the box that was saved on the edge of the goalie's fingers. Catholic stayed on the attack looking for the game-tying goal, but Holden kept denying the Cardinals.

UMW added an insurance goal with 1:29 remaining in the half. As Catholic had pressed up to score, the Eagles kicked a deep ball that was played to Mitchell. Mitchell flicked the ensuing pass off to Amanda Krest and Krest finished past the goalie to put UMW up 2-0. From there, the Eagles held off the Cardinals.

Holden made five saves on the day for UMW. The Eagles outshot Catholic 15-10, and had three corner kicks.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Shenandoah at 7 p.m.
