First Half Surge Leads UMW Women's Soccer Past Frostburg in CAC Tilt, 3-0

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team used a three-goal outburst early on to gain a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles run their win streak to three straight, and improve to 7-2-1 overall and 3-0 in league play.

The Eagles struck quickly and often in the first half, picking up the lead at 4:29 when freshman Abby Zimmerman collected a loose ball at the top of the box and one-timed a shot that found the net. UMW upped the advantage to 2-0 at 15:31, as senior Katie Rauch connected from deep left with a perfectly placed shot.

The Eagles added another before halftime, as senior Corinne Carson scored from deep at 22:39. UMW held the lead at 3-0 at halftime, as they outshot the Bobcats, 11-5, through 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Eagles remained stingy on the defensive end, limiting the Bobcats to three shots. UMW had several chances in seven half shots, but the score stood at 3-0 to the final horn.

Mary Washington led in shots, 18-8, including 6-2 in shots on frame, as well as in corner kicks, 5-0. UMW goalkeeper Kelcie Macomber made a pair of saves in recording the shutout, while Frostburg's Rhianna Lapin made three stops.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they visit CAC rival Salisbury University for a key conference game starting at 2:00 p.m.
