Freshman forward Lindsey Hendrickson scored the game-winning goal with 56.5 seconds remaining on a penalty kick as the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team opened its 2018 Capital Athletic Conference slate with a 2-1 win over York College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-2-1 overall; the Spartans drop to 4-6.
The Spartans grabbed the lead early, as Rachel Wilhelm scored on a cross from Caitlin Rankin at 9:02. York held the 1-0 advantage through halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles found the tying score at 70:14, as freshman Abby Zimmerman scored on a pass from Hendrickson straight up the crease. York was whistled for a foul in the box at 89:04, and Hendrickson scored on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Eagles the come-from-behind victory.
Each team had 10 shots in all, while York held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. UMW goalkeeper Allison Nork made four saves, while York's Sydney Kahn had five stops.
The Eagles will return to action on October 6, when they visit St. Mary's College of Md. in another CAC showdown. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
