Balanced Scoring Attack Leads UMW Women's Soccer Past Southern Va., 5-1, on Wednesday Evening

Five different players scored goals as the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team defeated Southern Virginia University, 5-1, on the road in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 8-4-1 overall, and 4-1 in CAC play.

Sophomore Allye Reynolds opened the scoring, netting an unassisted tally after a one-on-one with the goalie at 10:23. Sophomore Christina Carlston upped the lead to 2-0 with the eventual game winner at 31:29, on an assist from Marisa Madaras. Soph Lizzie Brooks capped the first half scoring at 43:43 on a cross from Madaras.

In the second, the Knights cut the margin to 3-1 on an Aydrie Palmer goal at 52:58, but senior Maryfay Jackson answered at 59:03 unassisted, and sophomore Christiana Meyers scored at 73:08 on a Shannon Blackstone assist.

The Eagles held in shots, 15-13, while Southern Virginia led in corner kicks, 7-2. Sophomore Haley Randall had three stops in goal for the Eagles,w hile Megan Turner had three saves for Southern Virginia.

UMW will return to action on Saturday, when they visit Christopher Newport University at 6 p.m. in another key CAC battle.
