UMW Women's Soccer Blanks Maryville, 3-0, in UMW Classic Finale

Senior midfielder Maryfay Jackson picked up a pair of first half assists as the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team defeated Maryville (Tenn.) College on Sunday aftrenoon at the Battleground. The Eagles even their record at 2-2-1 on the season.

UMW wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, as sophomore Emily Arbisi scored on a Jackson pass at 4:27. Jackson controlled a ball in the penalty area and played it back to Arbisi, who connected on a strong shot that deflected into goal off the goal post to give UMW the lead.

The Eagles quickly added an insurance tally, as Jackson fed sophomore Christina Carlston on the left side for the second goal of the game at 7:42. The Eagles carried a 2-0 lead to halftime, with a 7-1 shot advantage.

In the second, the Eagles expanded the lead in the opening minutes, as freshman Corinne Carson booted in a long left-footed strike from outside the box at 49:41. From there, neither team would find the nets, as the Eagles and sophomore goalie Madeline Duvall recorded the shutout. Senior defender Allie Branum turned in a solid defensive effort, clearing numerous chances.

The Eagles led in shots, 10-5, and had eight corner kicks to three for the Scots. Duvall had one save and made several quality plays to corral loose balls in play. Maryville's Mandy Marshall had four saves.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m. on the campus rec field.
