UMW Women's Soccer Falls to York, 1-0 in Double Overtime, in CAC Championship

York College's Jamie Sokolis scored after a blocked shot in the penalty box came down from six yards out, to give the York College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the University of Mary Washington on Saturday in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Championship. The Eagles end the season with a mark of 10-9-2.

In the first half, both teams had several chances, the best of which was a UMW header that hit the crossbar off a corner kick. The Eagles led, 8-5, in shots after one half, but neither team found the nets.

In the second half, the Eagles carried the majority of play, but were unable to capitalize. UMW's momentum seemed to dissipate in the extra periods, as the Eagles were held without a shot in either frame.

The Spartans scored with 1:38 remaining in the second extra period, as the Spartans sent a shot from the 18 yard line toward goal, and the resulting block sent the ball airward and down to Sokolis, who finished into the goal for the conference championship.

Mary Washington led in shots, 11-10, and in corner kicks, 5-4. Freshman goalie Haley Randall had four saves in goal for Mary Washington, while Kate Lutte had five stops for York.

The Eagles end the season with a mark of 10-9-2, their ninth straight winning season, and the Eagles surpassed 10 wins for their fourth straight campaign.
