Madaras' Goal Lifts Fifth Seeded Mary Washington Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win at Top-Seeded CNU in CAC Tourney Semifinal

Freshman Marisa Madaras scored the game's only goal to lift the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at top-seeded Christopher Newport University on Tuesday evening in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. The fifth-seeded Eagles will host sixth-seeded York, who topped #2 seed St. Mary's, on Saturday at the Battleground for the 2015 CAC Championship.

Madaras scored at 33:46, taking a long pass from Michelle Gibbons and after a touch ripped a hard shot high that slipped through the keeper's hands for the score.

The game remained 1-0 through halftime, and despite a late charge from the Captains, UMW held on for the shutout.

"Today was the definition of a team effort", said head coach Corey Hewson. "Haley played well between the pipes and our defenders were outstanding. It was also great to see our front runners capitalize when they had an opportunity. Proud of the effort against a great team."

The Captains held a commanding 23-5 advantage in shots, however just seven were shot on frame, and freshman Haley Randall stopped all seven attempts. The Captains led in corner kicks, 11-1.

The Eagles will take on York for the CAC Championship on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles topped the Spartans, 2-1, in regular season play at UMW. The Eagles return to the CAC Championship for the second straight season. UMW has won 13 CAC Championships, the most of any school in league history.
