UMW Women's Soccer Edges Salisbury, 3-2, in Shootout in CAC Tournament First Round

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team outlasted fourth seeded Salisbury University, 3-2 in penalty kicks, after a scoreless draw in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday in Salisbury. The Eagles will advance to the CAC Semifinals on Wednesday at top seeded Christopher Newport University.

The Sea Gulls had five corner kicks to two for UMW, and Alesha Seifert for the Gulls had two stops, while UMW keeper Haley Randall didn't log a save through timed play.

In the shootout, both teams missed their first two chances, before Salisbury's Rachel Anderson scored in the third round to break the ice. UMW's Leah Roth answered to tie the best-of-five series, and then Salisbury's Victoria Luc missed, setting up freshman marisa Madaras, who connected to put UMW up, 2-1. In the final pairing, Christine Clark connected for SU to tie the score, but freshman Kaitlyn Higgins scored by caroming her shot off the goalpost and in to clinch advancement for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will visit CNU on Wednesday in the conference semifinals. Game time has yet to be announced.
