UMW Women's Soccer Tops York, 2-1, on Wednesday in CAC Action

Senior Anna Brauch and junior Maryfay Jackson each scored first half goals to propel the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over York College on Wednesday in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-5 on the season, and 2-1 in CAC play.

At 14:51, Brauch charged up through the center of the midfield and connected from the top of the box to give the Eagles the lead. Just over three and a half minutes later, The eagles' Marisa Madaras connected for a solid shot that was saved, but the free ball went to a streaking Jackson, who scored, giving UMW a 2-0 advantage, which they held through halftime.

York came out inspired in the second half, and on their best chance of the second, two UMW defenders stopped shots on the goal line, but the Eagles were whistled for a hand ball, giving York a penalty kick.

Caitlin Rankin connected on the penalty kick at 72:44 to cut the deficit to 2-1, but York would not pull even, as the Eagles gained the home win.

Both teams had eight shots, with York holding a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Haley Randall had four saves in goal for UMW, while Kate Lutte had three stops for York.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, when they visit St. Mary's College at 1:00 p.m. in another CAC tilt.
