Meyers, Madaras Provide Offense as UMW Women's Soccer Tops Goucher, 2-0, on Saturday

Freshmen Christiana Meyers and Marisa Madaras each scored first half goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Goucher College on Saturday in Towson, Md. The Eagles improve to 5-3 on the season.

Meyers started the scoring quickly, netting her third goal of the season at 3:08, on an assist from freshman Lizzie Brooks. The Eagles upped the lead to 2-0 at 24:22, as Madaras scored on a header from freshman Shannon Blackstone's corner kick.

The Eagles led, 2-0, at intermission, and neither side would score in the second half, giving UMW its  third shutout of the year.

"We started off well, but struggled a bit to continue to find our rhythym", said UMW head coach Corey Hewson. "Goucher has a quality side, and they kept constant pressure on us. Glad that we were able to get away with the W."

Mary Washington led in shots, 13-7, and in corner kicks, 5-3. Freshman haley randall had three saves in 81 minutes in goal for the Eagles, with Kelcie Macomber adding one save in nine minutes. Julianna Harkavy had six saves for Goucher.

UMW will return to action on Tuesday when the Eagles host another former CAC opponent in Catholic University at 4:30 p.m.
