Freshmen Goals Lead UMW Women's Soccer to 3-0 Win over Coast Guard Academy on Saturday

Freshmen Lauren Brower, Marisa Madaras, and Mackenzie Kirkham each scored goals to pace the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the U.S. Coast guard Academy on Saturday in game one of the UMW Soccer Classic at a rainy Battleground Athletic Complex. The Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season.

Brower scored her second goal of the season at 14:01, on a pass from junior Maryfay Jackson, giving the Eagles the lead for good. UMW scored again at 43:06 on a beautifully placed pass from Christina Carlston to frosh Marisa Madaras, giving the Eagles the momentum and a 2-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the sides remained scoreless for 11 minutes, but freshman Mackenzie Kirkham scored at 56:07 to up the Eagle lead to 3-0. From there, the Eagles' defense remained strong, giving freshman goalkeeper Haley Randall the shutout victory.

The Eagles led in shots, 19-3, and in corner kicks, 12-1. Randall had a pair of saves in goal for the Eagles, while Rachel Boohar had eight saves for Coast Guard.

Mary Washington will be back in action again on Sunday when they host Wilkes University at 3:00 p.m. as the UMW Classic concludes.
