Brower, Roth Lead Efficient UMW Women's Soccer Past Shenandoah, 2-0, on Opening Night

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored twice in a five-minute span in the second half to defeat Shenandoah University, 2-0, on Tuesday night in Winchester in both teams' opener. The Eagles used a goal from freshman Lauren Brower to take a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute, and another from senior Leah Roth less than five minutes later.

The first half saw both sides struggling to find the net as they headed into the half at a 0-0 tie. The Eagles and Hornets combined for seven shots before the break.

Brower opened up the scoring in the 57th minute on an assist from Meghan Turney. In the 62nd minute, Roth scored on an assist from senior Lizzie Weast to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

"Shenandoah has great team speed, and is very organized", said UMW head coach Corey Hewson. "We played much smarter in the second half... Our upperclassmen stepped up and led a great team effort."

The Eagles were outshot, 13-5, but were efficient in their shooting, scoring on two of their first three shots of the half. UMW led in corner kicks 4-3 and freshman goalie Madeline Duvall recorded three saves. Erin Septer recorded three saves for Shenandoah.

The Eagles return to action on Friday as they visit SUNY Geneseo at 7:00 PM.
