Bednarcik's Two Scores Lead UMW Women's Soccer Past Salisbury, 2-1, in CAC Semifinals

Junior Jessica Bednarcik scored a pair of first half goals to propel the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Salisbury University in Capital Athletic Conference semifinal action on Wednesday in Salisbury. The Eagles improve to 12-6-2 overall and advance to Saturday's CAC Championship.

Bednarcik opened the scoring at 26:32, collecting a deflection of her own shot to score and give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. The Sea Gulls tied the score at 1-1 at 34:21, as Jamie Tacka scored on a Ruthie Lucas assist.

Just before halftime, Bednarcik scored the eventual game winner at 42:15, as her shot deflected off a Sea Gull defender and into goal. Neither team would score in the second half, giving the Eagles the 2-1 victory.

"Great team effort from each girl in the program", said head coach Corey Hewson. "I could not be more proud and happier for these girls. The seniors have battled hard for four yearsand have demonstrated a resolve that should serve as an example for those that follow."

Salisbury led in shots, 10-8, and in corner kicks, 4-0. UMW goalkeeper Charlotte Owens made three saves for the Eagles, while Michelle Conrad had one save for Salisbury.

The Eagles will vye for their 14th Capital Athletic Conference title on Saturday. The Eagles will visit Frostburg State University, who downed top seed Christopher Newport in penalty kicks, in the title game at 2 p.m.
