UMW Women's Soccer Upends St. Mary's, 3-2, in CAC Tourney First Round

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored three goals in less than an eight-minute span to defeat St. Mary's College, 3-2, on Saturday in St. Mary's City, Md. The Eagles improve to 11-6-2.

UMW started the flurry at 10:48, when freshman Taylor Decker connected for her third goal of the season, picking up an errant pass and lofting the ball over the keeper to give the Eagles the lead. Less than four minutes later, Jessica Bednarcik connected at 14:24, scoring at the end of a throw in that bounded through the box.

The Seahawks cut the score to 2-1 at 17:31 on a goal from Claire Kostelnik, but junior Maryfay Jackson scored unassisted one minute later to up UMW's lead to 3-1.

In the second, St. Mary's scored in the 60th minute to draw to within 3-2, but the Eagles preserved the lead and the victory with 30 shutout minutes to close the game.

"The girls played with alot of heart today", said UMW head coach Corey Hewson. "We made some adjustments from the last time we faced them and got some nice goals in transition. I am very proud of our group."

The Eagles led in shots, 16-10, and St. Mary's led in cornmer kicks, 9-2. Senior goalie Charlotte Owens had four saves for the Eagles, while Sydney Larkin had seven saves for St. Mary's.

Mary Washington will advance to the CAC semifinals on Wednesday at second-seeded Salisbury University. Game time is set for 2:30 pm.
