Abraham's Goal in Opening Minutes Leads UMW Women's Soccer Past Wesley and Into CAC Tournament

Senior Jenna Abraham scored just 1:17 into the game, and the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team made that score stand up in a 1-0 victory over Wesley College on Tuesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 10-6-2 overall, and punch their ticket for the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, which begins on Saturday.

The Eagles opened the game with a flourish, with three quality chances in the opening minutes. After hitting the crossbar seconds earlier, Abraham collected the loose ball from 10 yards out and eluded the reach of the Wesley goalkeeper to put UMW ahead, 1-0, just 1:17 into the game.

The score stood at 1-0 through halftime. The Eagles had several chances to further the lead, and Wesley saw a crossing ball deflect off the far goalpost, but neither team would score for the remainder of the game, as the Eagles held on for their 10th win of the season.

Mary Washington led in shots, 21-3, and in corner kicks, 7-3. Senior goalie Charlotte Owens had two saves for the Eagles, while Nasia Denegal had 11 stops for Wesley.

The Eagles advance to the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with the win, and will visit the third-seeded team in the bracket, pending Wednesday's results, on Saturday in first round action.
