Gallagher's Late Header Gives UMW Women's Soccer a 2-1 CAC Win Over Southern Virginia

Freshman Maggie Gallagher scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick from Maryfay Jackson at 86:14 to give the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia University on Tuesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-4-2 overall, and 2-2-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles held a decided edge in shots, but found themselves behind, 1-0, as the Knights scored on a penalty kick from Tatiana Monson at 22:59. The Eagles answered just before halftime, as freshman Anna Manser scored unassisted at 42:10.

The score stood tied throughout much of the second half. Freshman Maggie Gallagher scored her first goal of the season on a beautiful header, redirecting junior Maryfay Jackson's corner kick with 3:46 remaining.

The Eagles led in shots, 18-4, and in corner kicks, 8-2. Charlotte Owens didn't record a save in 90 minutes for the Eagles, while Makenzie Cox had four saves for Southern Virginia.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles visit Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m. in another CAC tilt.
