UMW Women's Soccer Falls to St. Mary's, 2-1

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. UMW falls to 7-3-1 overall, and 1-1 in league play.

The Eagles maintained the majority of possession in the opening minutes of the first half, but the Seahawks broke through at 24:57 on a goal from Gillian Sawyer on an assist from Jess Konecke to take a 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks' next score came via a penalty kick from Sawyer at 31:18, giving the visitors a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The Eagles responded by turning up the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Seahawks, 9-3, but could find the nets just once - by junior Jessica Bednarcik at 68:05 off a Michelle Gibbons corner kick.

The Eagles led in shots, 13-8, and in corner kicks, 6-1. Senior goalie Charlotte Owens did not record a save in the first half, and Sara Armor made one stop in the second half for the Eagles. Sydney Larkin had three saves for St. Mary's.

Mary Washington will return to action next Wednesday when they visit Frostburg State university at 6:00 p.m. in another CAC contest.
