UMW Women's Soccer Tops Coast Guard, 2-0, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washingotn women's soccer team used a penalty kick from Maryfay Jackson in the early going, and a late score from Anna Manser to top Coast Guard Academy, 2-0, on Saturday in the UMW Classic. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

Jackson opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a penalty kick. The Eagles led at halftime, 1-0, holding a 5-1 shot advantage.

In the second half, the Eagles led in shots, 4-1, but were unable toi find a second tally until the final minute, as freshman Anna Manser scored her fourth goal of the year on an assist from Meghan Turney.

"Great effort today", said UMW head coach Corey Hewson. "Very strong defensively again and through the midfield we are working to be a bit more consistent. In the final third we nee dto be a bit more composed and when we put it all together we are going to be a tough side to beat."

The Eagles led in shots, 9-2, and in corner kicks, 9-0. Senior goalie Charlotte Owens had two saves for the Eagles, while Holly Moore had three for Coast Guard.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they face Rowan University at 3:00 p.m.
