Manser's First Goal Lifts UMW Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory over Shenandoah in Season Opener

Freshman Anna Manser scored her first career goal as the lone score of the contest as the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team defeated Shenandoah University, 1-0, in both teams' season opener on Friday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-0 on the season.

After a tightly contested defensive effort in the first half that saw UMW hold a slim 3-1 advantage in shots, the Eagles opened up opportunities in the second, outshooting the guests, 13-2, in the second stanza. But the game remained scoreless until 77:15, when Manser scored on a Jenna Abraham assist, which proved to be the game winner.

"I thought we came out really well today, and after we struggled to find an answer early on, eventually our girls broke through with Anna providing the winner", said UMW head coach Corey Hewson.

The Eagles led in shots, 16-3, and in corner kicks, 6-1. UMW goalie Charlotte Owens didn't record a save in the shutout, while Erin Septer had four saves for the Hornets (0-1).

Mary Washington will be back in action on Monday when the Eagles host Ferrum College at 4:00 p.m.
