UMW's Reynolds, Mayo named to VaSID All-State Women's Soccer Team

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Nine different programs from across the Commonwealth of Virginia were represented on the 2013 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Women’s Soccer Team, led by five selections for Christopher Newport University. Lynchburg College highlighted the major awards as junior All-American Dessi Dupuy was named Player of the Year and Dr. Todd Olsen collected his record seventh straight Coach of the Year honor.

Joining the two Hornets was an unprecedented tie for VaSID Rookie of the Year as a pair of defenders shared the award. Washington & Lee’s Ashley Hogan and CNU’s Sam Rabinek were both named their respective conference’s Rookie of the Year and become the first tandem to win VaSID’s first-year honor.

Hogan was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year and earned first team All-ODAC honors, starting 18 games for the Generals. She anchored a back line that allowed just nine total goals on the season for a league-leading 0.42 goals against average. As a team, the Generals ranked 12th nationally in GAA and 15th in shutout percentage (.667).

Rabinek stepped into the starting lineup for CNU after just three games and anchored a defense that allowed just a 0.77 goals against average in 2013. She earned CAC Rookie of the Year honors and was a first team All-Conference selection after leading the team in minutes played. She helped the Captains post 10 shutouts and also scored three goals for CNU.

Dupuy, a first team NSCAA All-American, was the offensive leader for one of the top teams in the nation this year, helping lead the country’s second leading scoring offense (4.63 goals per game). The junior forward scored over 20 goals for the third straight season, increasing her career total to 77. She is just two scoring strikes shy of the program and conference record for career goals, with a full season yet to play. The ODAC Player of the Year, Dupuy led the conference in points and goals after posting 23 goals and seven assists.

For the seventh consecutive season, Dr. Todd Olsen grabbed the VaSID Coach of the Year honor, after one of the most successful years in program history. The Hornets finished with a record of 22-2, won their fourth straight ODAC Championship and reached the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year. Olsen’s 2013 squad broke program records for wins in a season, goals scored in a season (111) and total points scored (298).

Dupuy, Hogan and Rabinek were all first team All-State selections; the rest of the first team was filled out by seven of their teammates and one player from Averett University. They are Bupe Okeowo (F-Chris. Newport), Sandra Johansson (F-Averett), Angela Bosco (F-Lynchburg), Holley Beasley (MF-Washington & Lee), Joy Piirto (MF-Chris. Newport), Jenn Snyder (MF-Lynchburg), Rachel Sadowski (D-Lynchburg) and Addie Healy (GK-Washington & Lee).

VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or conference in the state of Virginia.
