UMW Women's Soccer Falls to Washington & Lee, 2-1

UMW Women's Soccer Falls to Washington & Lee, 2-1

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to tie the score, but fell, 2-1, to Washington & Lee University on Sunday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles even their record at 2-2 on the year.

The Generals dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Eagles, 8-1, but had only a penalty kick at 22:56 from Haley Ward for the only score of the first 45 minutes. In the second, the Eagles came out firing, as senior Erin Reynolds scored her fourth goal of the weekend unassisted after streaking up the left side on a breakaway, and found the net to tie the score at 46:12.

The Eagles scored an apparent go-ahead goal with 15 minutes remaining, but the goal was called back on an offsides call on the ricochetted shot rebound. Less than a minute later, W&L's Katie Rossi hit an apparent cross from the right side, which squirted through the UMW goalkeeper's outstretched arms and into goal for the eventual game winner.

The Eagles led in shots, 11-9, after outshooting the visitors, 10-1, in the second half, and the Generals led in corner kicks, 4-3. Alyssa Goodwin had one save for UMW while Addie Healy had five saves for W&L.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host Messiah College at 4:30 p.m.
