UMW Women's Soccer Falls to Averett, 3-1


The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but fell, 3-1, to Averett University on Tuesday evening at the Battleground. The match was delayed at the outset by 45 minutes due to lightning. The Eagles fall to 6-2-1 on the year.

The Eagles started the scoring at 24:52 when senior Marianne Dubinsky (Blacksburg, Va., Blacksburg) scored unassisted. The Cougars tied the score with 53 seconds left in the half to send the game into intermission tied at one.

Averett took the lead six minutes into the second half, and scored again at the 65 minute mark with an insurance tally. The Cougars led in shots, 14-7, while UMW had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. UMW senior goalkeeper Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) had seven saves in goal for the Eagles.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
