Sophomore forward Erin Reynolds (Oakton, Va., Oakton) scored the game-winning goal with 2:31 remaining in the first overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccder team to a 2-1 victory at York College in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament in York, Pa. on Sunday. The Eagles improve to 9-6-2 on the season, and will advance to the CAC semifinals on Wednesday at Salisbury University.
Throughout much of the action, the Eagles struggled to get anything going, having been outshot 10-1 at one point. York couldn't find the nets, either, until Jena Armister scored at 56:39. Trailing 1-0, the Eagles responded at 73:32, as junior Excy Herrera (Alexandria, Va., Thomas Edison) found sophomore Kelsey Carter (Richmond, Va., Mills Godwin) for a header score that knotted the game at 1-1. From that point, the Eagles turned up the effort with several quality chances, but couldn't find a winning score by the close of regulation.
That changed when Reynolds drilled a shot at York goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel at 97:29, collected the rebound, and found the goal with her eighth score of the season, giving UMW the victory that avenged a 2-1 overtime loss at York during the regular season.
York led in shots, 14-9, and in corner kicks, 6-2. Senior goalie Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) made five saves for the Eagles, including a diving save in the closing minutes of regulation.
The Eagles will visit Salisbury University on Wednesday in the semifinals. UMW dropped a 2-0 decision to the Sea Gulls at the Battleground during the regular season. Game time will be at 2:30 p.m.
