UMW Women's Soccer Tops Randolph-Macon, 2-1

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored a pair of early goals and held on at the end for a 2-1 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday in Ashland, Va. The Eagles improve to 3-1-1 on the year.

Junior forward Amy Olson (Crofton, Md., Arundel) opened the scoring in the fifth minute for UMW unassisted. Sophomore Sunny Herold (Palmyra, Va., Fluvanna) would score what would prove to be the game winner at 16:46 on an assist from freshman Madison Hanley (Virginia Beach, Va., First Colonial). The Eagles led, 2-0, at halftime.

Randolph-Macon cut the deficit in half with a goal by Brittany Jones with 20 minutes remaining, and the Yellow Jackets had several more opportunities to tie the score, but not for several outstanding saves from UMW goalie Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee).

The Eagles outshot RMC, 26-15, and had three corner kicks to nine for the hosts. Brehm had three saves for the Eagles while China Bradley had 12 stops for Randolph-Macon.

Mary Washington will host Wesley College in the Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
