Sophomore goalkeeper Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) made 18 saves through regulation and two overtimes, and sophomore goalie Grace Rosales (Vienna, Va., Madison) made three saves in four opportunities in the shootout round to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to advance to the CAC Championship past top-seeded Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles will advance to the CAC championship match on Saturday.
The Sea Gulls outshot the Eagles, 36-7, and had five corner kicks to two for Mary Washington. But Brehm made 18 saves and sophomore midfielder Nicole Dierkes (Fairfax, Va., W.T. Woodson) prevented another goal by positioning herself on the goal line for another stop near the end of regulation.
In the shootout, Salisbury's first attempt was saved by Rosales, and Chrissy Reardon (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) connected on her shot, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead after one attempt. Salisbury's second attempt sailed wide, but UMW's attempt failed to connect, keeping the score at 1-0 after two rounds. Each team missed its third attempt, with Rosales making another save. In round four, Rosales stopped her third PK of the round, and freshman Lilly Briedis-Ruiz (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) connected for the clinching goal.
Mary Washington will visit second-seeded Stevenson University in the CAC Championship game. The Eagles have won 12 CAC Championships, most recently in 2004.
