DiPippa's Goal Leads UMW Women's Soccer Past St. Mary's in CAC Tourney 1st Round

Senior forward Allison DiPippa (Centreville, Va., Westfield) scored the game winning goal 3:49 into overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's College in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles, 12-4-3 on the season, advance to Wednesday's semifinals at top seeded Salisbury University.

The Seahawks maintained the better of play for much of the first half, outshooting the Eagles, 6-2. Erika Kenny scored for St. Mary's at 35:54 on an assist from Carly Harmon for the only goal in the opening 45 minutes.

The Eagles came to life in the second half, outshooting the Seahawks, 7-3, including the tying score by junior Sarah Tryon (Fairfax Station, Va., South County) on an assist from Amy Olson (Crofton, Md., Arundel) at 82:03. DiPippa ended the game at 93:49 on a pass from sophomore Becky Clark (Doylestown, Pa., Central Bucks West).

In all, the Eagles edged SMC in shots, 11-9, and had five corner kicks to six for the Seahawks. UMW sophomore goalkeeper Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) had four saves for the Eagles, including one from point blank range in the final 10 seconds of regulation. Grace Koplow had three stops for St. Mary's.

Mary Washington will visit top seeded Salisbury on Wednesday in the CAC semifinals. Game time has yet to be announced. Salisbury edged the Eagles in overtime in Salisbury in their regular season matchup.
