Herold Leads UMW Women's Soccer Past Marymount, 6-2

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Freshman forward Sunny Herold (Palmyra, Va., Fluvanna) scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 6-2 victory over Marymount University in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at the Battleground.  With the win, the Eagles improve to 8-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in CAC play.

Mary Washington jumped on the scoreboard early, with sophomore Morgan Thompson (Richmond, Va., Cosby) scoring on a header off a Sarah Tryon (Fairfax Station, Va., South County) corner kick at 1:45. From there, the game remained scoreless into the second half, when sophomore Amy Olson (Crofton, Md., Arundel) scored on a Nicole Dierkes (Fairfax, Va., W.T. Woodson) assist at 51:06. The Eagles then registered an own goal to up the lead to 3-0 at 58:50, before a flurry of action to end the game. 

In the final 14:49 of the game, the two teams combined for five scores, with Herold scoring at 75:14, Marymount's Dana Zalowski scoring at 75:51, Tryon scoring at 77:31, MU's Monica Paolicelli scoring at 80:45, and Herold scoring again at 86:51.

The Eagles outshot the Saints, 14-8, and had four corner kicks to three for Marymount. Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) had three saves and Grace Rosales (Vienna, Va., Madison) none in UMW's goal, while Stephanie Flood had one save and Gaby Prellezo three for Marymount.

The Eagles will visit Salisbury University in a battle of regionally ranked teams on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
