1991 Mary Washington College Women's Soccer Season in Review

A goal for Kurt Glaeser when he assumed the reins of Mary Washington College women's soccer in 1989 was to build his program into a force at the national level. And although the Eagles lost a hard-fought 1-0 battle to Trenton State in the opening round of the 1991 NCAA Division IIITournament, it has become apparent that MWC is on the verge of reacking the next level.

"We allowed the fewest goals per game (0.87) in the program's history against a tough schedule," said Glaeser. "And we were able to finally defeat Methodist College and emerge as the top team in the South Region this past season, which was one of our major goals for 1991." Team and individual honors were bountiful in a 14-4-2 season, the third straight in which Mary Washington earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament MWC won the inaugural Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship, winning all six games against conference foes, and outscoring them 23-1 in the process.

The Eagles concluded the regular season with a #8 national ranking, the highest in school history. Meanwhile, no less than eight MWC starters garnered individual honors, including five All-South Region selections. Forward Ashley Young (Jr./Newport News, VA) scored 14 goals to lead the team in scoring for the second straight year. Young was named CAC and Virginia College Division Player ofthe Year, as well as making First Team All-South Region.

Joining Young on the first team were forward Erin Patrick (Sr./ Arlington, VA; nine goals in '91)-a second-team AllAmerican in 1991 - and sweeper Kristine Healy (Sr./Fairfax, VA). Midfielder Kelley Walsh (Fr./Vienna, VA) and forward Becky Miller (So./ Alexandria, VA; eight goals) were named to the second team. Healy and Walsh were first-team All-CAC choices, as was goalkeeper Amy Wilvert (Fr./Springfield,VA), who registered seven shutouts and a 0.90 goals/against average in her debut season. Patrick and back Naomi Fagan were second-team All-CAC choices. An eighth Eagle All-Star (second team All-State) was midfielder Val Hibbard (Woodbridge, VA), who led the team with eight assists.
