Women's Rugby Blanks Maryland, 62-0

Women's Rugby Blanks Maryland, 62-0

On April 15, the University of Mary Washington Women's Rugby team played their final match of the spring 2023 season, hosting the University of Maryland.  Both sides, low on numbers, agreed to play 10s.  Normally, 10s matches consist of 10 minutes halves.  The teams agreed to play 3 15-minute periods.

The play started slowly for Mary Washington as they had problems with ball possession.  However, a costly mistake by Maryland at the 4-minute mark allowed team captain Carrie Garvey to break free for the first try of the match.  Converting the try was junior Libby York.  After a bit of back and forth with ball possession, UMW finally settled into playing rugby.  Carrie Garvey continued her first period success, scoring again at the 11th minute and on the final play of the period, giving her a hat track with just 11 minutes between her first and third scores.  York converted one of Garvey's tries, bringing the score to 19-0 at the end of the first period.

Mary Washington continued their fast-paced attack and excellent support, and six minutes into the second period rookie Angelle Laboard scored her first rugby try.  Then, just 3 minutes later, senior Sidney Hughes scored.  The highlight of the match came on the ensuing kickoff when Hughes caught the ball and ran in her second try.  With just 1 minute remaining in the period, rookie Nyah Speicher also scored her first try ever.  Three of the four tries in the second period were converted by Libby York, bringing the total to 45-0.

In the third period, Sidney Hughes completed the second hat trick of the day for Mary Washington, scoring just 4 minutes into the period, with York adding another conversion.  To cap off the third period, rookies Nyah Speicher and Angelle Laboard each added another try to their day's tally.  The strength of the Mary Washington offense combined with their stifling defense showcased the best match of the year for UMW, as they won 62-0.
