On Feb 11, 2017 the Mary Washington women's rugby team hosted the Rappahannock Women's Rugby Football Club. Unfortunately, Mary Washington was missing several players due to previous commitments. This produced one of the weakest performances by Mary Washington this year, as they lost 81-5.
Rappahannock Women's Rugby, established several years ago, has played a number of friendly matches against Mary Washington in the past. Several former and current UMW students currently play for Rappahannock, therefore, the teams always look forward to playing each other. Ironically, Rappahannock's first score was by UMW student Ellie Cassetta ('18).
Although Mary Washington was missing several players, the performance by Rappahannock was the best Mary Washington has seen from them. Even with all their starters, it is doubtful Mary Washington could have won against Rappahannock.
Mary Washington's lone score was by Gail Crunkhorn ('18), who scored on an 8-man pickup off of an attacking scrum, just 5 meters from the goal.
