UMW Women's Lax Tops Bridgewater, 19-11, on Senior Night

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team erupted for 19 goals en route to a 19-11 victory over visiting Bridgewater College on Friday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-8 on the season.

UMW raced out to a 5-2 lead in the opening frame. After Bridgewater opened the scoring, UMW used a man-up score from senior Bridget Crowley at 11:34 and another from classmate Caeley Terapane at 11:08 to grab the lead. After BC tied the score, UMW reeled off three straight. Senior Katie Blair netted her first of four on the night at 5:17 on an assist from Maria Schneider, and Mueller added her second at 4:37 on a Blair assist. Daelyn Gregory capped the run on a Kendel Iwanicki assist at 1:50.

Bridgewater responded in the second by scoring four straight to take a 6-5 lead, but UMW followed with four of their own to regain momentum. Freshman Abigail Fisher started the run with a free position shot at 6:15, and Blair followed at 4:21 from Mueller. Freshman Anna Dube used a Fisher pass at 1:22, and junior Molly Daw capped the quarter at 37 seconds to put UMW ahead, 9-6.

In the third, Daw opened the scoring at 13:53. After a BC score, the home Eagles netted three straight, from Daw, Crowley, and Blair, on a Crowley pass. Bridgewater closed the quarter with a pair of goals, but UMW put the affair to rest to open the fourth with five straight scores. Mueller scored in the opening minute on a free position shot, and Fisher used a Mueller assist at 11:54. Blair added another at 11:11, and Terapane scored on a free position at 7:25. Crowley capped the run at 5:18 from Daw, and, after two BC goals, Mueller capped the scoring on a Crowley pass in the final minute.

UMW led in shots, 40-29, as well as ground balls, 24-16. UMW goalie Cailyn Tripp made 11 saves, including the 300th of the season early in the contest.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles host Meredith College at 7:00 p.m.
