The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-13 overtime decision to Christopher Newport University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 9-8 on the season.
The Captains jumped in front with a pair of scores before senior Kayla Sarazin scored unassisted at 6:34 of the first quarter. After another Captains goal, the Eagles erupted for three straight to close the first. Sarazin scored unassisted at 3:37, and junior Katie Blair followed at 2:32. Sarazins cored on a Rachel Oestrike assist at 1:48 to put the Eagles in front.
Molly Daw opened the second with an unassisted score, and, after a CNU goal, Blair added another before Caeley Terapane scored on a Sarazin assist at 4:16. The Captains pulled to within 7-5 before Maya Koebke scored on an Oestrike assistwith eight seconds remaining.
Daw opened the third by putting the Eagles up, 9-5, and UMW scored two after a CNU score, with Terapane scoring a pair on assists from Blair and Koebke.
CNU scored the first two goals of the fourth before Sarazin stopped the momentum at 8:58. CNU scored again, but Daw scored again at 4:37 on a free-position shot to put UMW up, 13-9. The Captains scored four goals in the final 2:36 to tie the score, and found the game winner in overtime.
The Captains led in shots, 29-28, while the Eagles won 17 of 29 draw controls. Cailyn Tripp made 13 saves in 56 minutes of action.
UMW will be back in action on May 3 in the C2C Tournament semifinal.
