Freshman Maya Koebke scored five goals and added an assist in leading the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory over Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.
The game was close throughout the first two low-scoring quarters. Junior Katie Blair opened the scoring with 6:28 left in the first quarter, and Koebke followed with her first of the day, at 4:24. Shenandoah scored in the final minute to draw to within 2-1 at the close of the first quarter.
In the second, Koebke started the scoring to extend the lead to 3-1 with 13:53 remaining, on a free position shot. The Hornets responded with two staright goals to tie the score, but UMW used another Koebke tally with 3:28 left to grab a 4-3 lead that they would carry to halftime.
The third quarter was quiet offensively, until a late rally by the Eagles put them in command. Koebke scored unassisted with 1:49 left in the quarter, and Victoria Mueller and Caeley Terapane each scored on Kayla Sarazin assists in the final minute, as the Eagles seized momentum and a 7-3 lead.
The Eagles started the fourth with goals from Ashley Firesheets and Blair, and a man-up goal from Molly Daw sandwiched between Shenandoah goals. The Eagles put the game away with three straight goals to end the contest, from Firesheets, Koebke, and Sarazin.
The Eagles led in shots, 32-24, and ground balls, 20-17. The Eagles won 14 of 22 draw controls, with Sarazin collecting six. UMW junior goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp made 11 saves for the Eagles.
Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday evening at Meredith University at 6:00 p.m.
