UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at Christopher Newport, 11-10, in OT

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to force overtime, but fell on the road at Christopher Newport University, 11-10, in extra time on Saturday in Newport News, Va. The Eagles slip to 8-7 on the season.

Both defenses started strong in this contest, as Christopher Newport scored the only two goals of the first quarter. UMW started the scoring in the second, as junior Kayla Sarazin scored the first UMW tally at 11:12. CNU responded with two more scores to take a 4-1 lead, but Bridget Crowley gained one back for UMW at 5:20. The Captains then added another pair of scores to up their advantage to 6-2 at halftime. 

The momentum swung to the Eagles in the third quarter, as the offense opened up, starting with a Sarazin free position shot with 8:18 left. After a CNU score, the Eagles reeled off three straight to draw to within 7-6. Rebecca Pullen scored on a Sarazin assist with 4:55 left in the period, and Sarazin followed 46 seconds later with an unassisted score. Pullen closed the frame with a score assisted by Clare Madden with 23 seconds left.

Christopher Newport opened the fourth with a goal to extend its lead to 8-6, but UMW responded with two of their own. Sarazin scored with a player down at 10:06 on an Erin Steinberg pass, and Crowley followed unassisted at 8:30.

The teams traded scores down the thrilling stretch. After CNU took a 9-8 lead, Pullen scored with 5:37 left to tie the score at nine. CNU scored again, but Rachel Oestrike found the nets with 23 seconds left to again tie the score at 10, and send the game to overtime. CNU scored the winner with 4:16 left in the extra period.

CNU led in shots, 28-24, and the Eagles led in ground balls, 13-10. UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller made nine saves on the day, and Sarazin gained five draw controls in addition to her team-leading four goals and two assists.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Roanoke College at 4:00 p.m.
