King's Nine Points Leads #20 UMW Women's Lax Past Southern Va., 16-6

The 20th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used a career-high seven goals and two assists from senior Kennedy King in defeating Southern Virginia University, 16-6, on Wednesday evening in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles move to 5-4 overall, and 3-2 in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action.

The hosts opened the scoring in the opening minutes, and held a brief lead before King scored her first goal of the day with 22:39 remaining. After another Knights score, Kayla Sarazin scored on a King assist, kickstarting a 7-0 run to close the first half. Freshman Katie Blair scored with 11:40 left, and King followed with three straight scores in a span of 2:30 of game action. Senior Kate Sovero upped the margin to 7-2 with 6:42 to go, and King capped the first half scoring with 5:03 remaining on a free position shot.

In the second half, Sarazin opened the scoring with 28:37 on the scoreboard, and the 9-2 lead held for ten minutes of game play. After SVU scored with 18:23 remaining, King followed with 15:59 to go. The Knights scored three straight to cut the margin to 10-6, but the Eagles then closed the game with six straight goals in the final 10 minutes to finish the matter. Blair scored on a King assist to start the run, and King added another with 7:12 remaining. Sarazin and Blair followed on Samantha Stachowiak assists, and Sophie Mace added another with 2:47 to go. Lindsay Brandow capped the scoring with a free position shot in the waning moments.

The Eagles led in shots, 43-15, and went 18-20 on clears. Blair scored five draw controls. UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller made six saves in 55 minutes, and Brooke Barsella added five minutes of clean relief.

UMW will return to action on Saturday, when they host Meredith University at 1:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
