#16 UMW Women's Lax Falls to #3 W&L, 8-3, on Saturday Afternoon

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead, but third ranked Washington and Lee University pulled away in the second half for an 8-3 victory over the Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 0-3 on the season.

Mary Washington opened the scoring 1:08 into the action, as freshman Katie Blair scored unassisted. Nearly eight minutes later, the Eagles pushed their advantage to 2-0 on a score from freshman Erin Steinberg, on a Rebecca Pullen assist. The Generals would score one minute later, knot the score at 1-1 with 10 minutes left, and went ahead for the first time with 2:16 remaining in the half.

The second half saw the Washington and Lee defense stand out. W&L scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes to build a 5-2 lead, before UMW sophomore Kayla Sarazin scored unassisted with 17:48 remaining. The Generals would score the final three goals of the contest over the final 15 minutes.

The Generals led in shots, 29-8, as well as ground balls, 27-20. UMW junior goalkeeper Reilly Miller stood out in goal, making 15 saves on W&L's 23 shots on goal. Junior Grace Clarke had four ground balls to lead the Eagle transition, while senior Rylie Cole added four draw controls and three ground balls.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Shenandoah University at 4:00 p.m.
