#14 UMW Women’s Lacrosse Tops Roger Williams, 9-6, on Saturday Afternoon

The fourteenth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team topped Roger Williams University, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. Freshman Clare Madden led the Eagles with four goals on the day. UMW improves to 4-2 overall on the season.

Madden got the scoring started in the first half as she scored the first two goals of the game to put UMW up 2-0 10 minutes in. Paige Haskins added a goal on an assist from Madden to stretch the lead to 3-0. The Hawks answered with a goal with 9:48 left in the first. Morgan Shorts scored the last goal of the game on a free position shot with 2:10 to play to give UMW a 4-1 lead. 

Madden scored her third goal of the day just 47 seconds into the second half. Roger Williams answered with a goal, but Madden added her fourth of the day to put UMW up 6-2. The Hawks scored with 15:01 left to get within three, but Shorts and Haskins both added goals to extend the Eagles' lead to 8-3 with 10:08 to play. Roger Williams scored with 7:42 to play to go down four. Shorts added a goal in a man-up opportunity with just 2:18 left in the game. The Eagles gave up two goals in the closing minute but held on to win 9-6.

Samantha Stachowiak and Dalaney Blottenberger both caused two turnovers a piece. Rylie Cole won six draw controls and picked up four ground balls to lead UMW. Grace Clarke and Rebecca Pullen each picked up three ground balls a piece. Reilly Miller made four saves in goal on the day.

The Eagles led in shots 34-15, won 10-17 draw controls, and went 19-21 in clear opportunities. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to McDaniel for a game at 4 p.m.
