#9 UMW Women’s Lacrosse Falls to #7 Wesleyan, 11-6, in Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

The ninth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team fell to seventh-ranked Wesleyan University, 11-6, in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday afternoon in Middletown, CT. The Eagles finish their season with a 16-5 record, while achieving their highest ranking at #2 overall. 

On an ugly, rainy day UMW got out to an early start as they scored just 1:23 into the game. Hope Lockwood gave them the early advantage as she scored on an assist from Julia Albert. Wesleyan answered as they scored four straight goals and held a 4-1 lead with 22:33 to play in the first.

Mackenzie Maguire ended the run as she put one in the back of the net with 15:56 to play. After a Wesleyan score, Albert added a goal on a free position shot with 5:14 left to put the game at 5-3. Just before the half ended, the Cardinals added a sixth goal to hold a three goal advantage.

Out of the half, the Eagles brought the game within one, 6-5, with 25:15 remaining in the game. Albert scored the first goal, unassisted, and then Allison Davis added a goal to put the Eagles down just one. Wesleyan then went on a run over the next 20 minutes to score five straight and hold the Eagles scoreless over that time. The score stood at 11-5 with 5:22 to play. Albert scored the last goal of the game with 2:45 to play.

Paige Haskins led the team with five draw controls. Jennifer Bosserman, Samantha Stachowiak, and Hanna Ashby all picked up three ground balls a piece. Paige Childers, Haskins, and Bosserman all caused two turnovers. Ashby made six saves in goal for the Eagles.
