The seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team fell to ninth-ranked York College, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles slip to 13-3 overall, and 3-2 in the CAC.
UMW came out hot in the opening minutes as Mackenzie Maguire scored just 2:33 into the game on a free position shot. Allison Davis gave UMW a 2-0 lead as she scored with 24:41 left. York then took control of the first half as they scored five straight goals and held the Eagles to just those two goals scored in the early minutes. The Spartans went into the half with a 5-2 advantage.
In the second half, Julia Albert got on the board as she scored four minutes in on a free position shot to put UMW down just two, 5-3. York scored two straight goals to increase their lead to four, 7-3, with 23:08 left in the game. Maguire then put an end to that run as she scored unassisted with 20:48 to play.
Again the Spartans scored two straight goals and increased their lead to five, 9-4 with 14:27 to play. The Eagles then went on a run to get back in the game. Kristen Kunaniec started the run with a free position goal with 11:41 left, then Paige Haskins scored on a free position shot just a minute later. Haskins then scored again with 10:10 to play to draw the Eagles within two, 9-7. York added a goal with 6:47 remaining and the Eagles couldn't find the back of the net from there.
Rylie Cole caused two turnovers and picked up five ground balls, while Sarah Hampton caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Hanna Ashby made eight saves in goal for the Eagles.
UMW will be back in action as they will host Frostburg State at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
