#5 UMW Women’s Lacrosse Tops CNU, 18-7, on Saturday Afternoon

The fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team topped Christopher Newport University, 18-7, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. as part of the Type I Diabetes game. The eagles improve to 10-2 overall, and 1-1 in the CAC. Senior Hope Lockwood scored five goals, senior Julia Albert had four goals, and senior Mackenzie Maguire dished out eight assists to lead the offense.

CNU scored two early goals to take a quick 2-0 lead in the first three minutes. The duo of Lockwood and Maguire put the Eagles ahead 3-2 with 21:36 to play, as Lockwood scored three goals all off of assists from Maguire. Paige Haskins got on the board with 16:47 remaining as she scored on an assist from Albert and then Albert added one of her own on an assist from Allison Davis

Maguire capped the six goal run for the Eagles as she scored with 12:27 left. The Captains again scored two straight goals to get within just two, 6-4. Over the last 8:25 of the half, the Eagles dominated the ball as they scored five goals and gave up none. Kristen Kunaniec scored her first goal of the day on an assist from Davis and then Albert scored unassisted at the 7:09 mark.

Haskins added a goal from Maguire, Albert scored her third goal of the game on an assist from Kunaniec, and then Kunaniec capped the scoring for the first half as she scored on an assist from Albert to extend the UMW lead to 11-4.

UMW kept their run going early in the second half as they scored three straight goals to take a 10 goal advantage. Davis scored out of the half on an assist from Maguire and then Kunaniec finished a goal on a dime from Maguire to put UMW up 13-4. Davis gave the Eagles a 14-4 lead with 24:40 to play in the game. 

CNU scored with 22:46 to play to get them within single digits, 14-5. Albert then scored her final goal of the game, unassisted, and then Lockwood scored on an assist from Maguire to put UMW up 16-5 with 17:25 to play. 

The Captains got a goal back on a man-up opportunity, and then Lockwood added her final goal of the day on another assist from Maguire to put UMW up 17-6 with 11:53 to play. CNU scored their final goal of the game with 4:01 left. Davis topped the scoring off for the day as she made an excellent play to pick off a ball thrown by the goalie, scoop it up, and then put it in the back of the net to help UMW win 18-7.

Haskins led the team with eight draw controls, while Davis had six and also picked up five ground balls. Rylie Cole made her presence felt on the defensive end as she caused four turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Hanna Ashby made seven saves in goal for the Eagles.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday as they will travel to Southern Virginia for a game at 4:30 p.m.
