Haskins’ Five Goals Leads #17 UMW Women’s Lacrosse Past Lynchburg, 18-9

Sophomore Paige Haskins scored five goals to lead the seventeenth ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team past Lynchburg College, 18-9, on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.

The Hornets got on the board first as they scored 1:44 into the game. UMW then scored four goals unanswered as Haskins scored two, while Hope Lockwood and Mackenzie Maguire added one each. Lynchburg scored another goal with 14:33 remaining in the first half to put the score at 4-2 in favor of the Eagles.

Haskins added another goal on a free position shot with 13:08 left. UMW added two more over the next 1:34, one from Savannah Boyd and another from Haskins. Maguire scored her second goal of the day with 2:31 remaining in the first half to push the Eagles lead to 8-2 and that's the lead they took into halftime.

Julia Albert got the scoring started in the second half as she scored on an assist from Lockwood. After Lynchburg scored Haskins, Maguire, Albert, and Kennedy King all added goals to extend the Eagles lead to 13-3.

Lynchburg scored three goals in a row to cut into the lead and make it 13-6 with 13:46 to play. Holly Hudson got into the scoring column with 13:09 remaining to give the Eagles a 14-6 lead.

Freshman Micaela Quinn scored, then assisted on a goal by King to grow the lead to 16-6. King added another goal on a free position shot with 7:25 to play. Over the final 7:25, Lynchburg scored three goals and Madison Hurlburt scored for UMW as the Eagles won 18-9.

UMW led in shots, 40-25, as well as draw controls, 19-9. Shannon Bremer recorded seven saves for the Eagles. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Randolph-Macon at 3:30 p.m.
