#17 UMW Women's Lax Opens with 12-11 Win at #4 Washington & Lee

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team rallied to defeat fourth ranked Washington & Lee University, 12-11, on Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

The back and forth affair saw the two teams battle with neither extending beyond a two-goal margin. After the Generals started with a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes, the Eagles tied the score with a pair of free position goals from Holly Hudson. After a W&L score, Julia Albert tied the score on another free position shot with 18:53 left.

The Generals then gained a two-goal lead with a pair of scores, before UMW used a pair of goals from Mackenzie Maguire to tie the score with 9:12 remaining. After W&L scored a pair to resume the lead, Hope Lockwood scored to cut the halftime deficit to 7-6.

In the second half, UMW started with three straight goals to take a 9-7 lead. Albert started the scoring, and Lockwood added a pair to give UMW its largest lead. After a pair of Generals goals tied the score at 9-9, Allison Davis and Paige Haskins each scored to return the Eagle lead to 11-9. W&L responded with a goal to cut the margin to 11-10, but Hudson scored with 3:33 left to return the lead to two. A late Generals score cut the deficit to 12-11, but UMW held on for the victory.

Albert had four points, including two goals and two assists. Hudson and Lockwood each had three goals, and Maguire had two goals and an assist.

Washington & Lee led in shots, 32-19, while the Eagles led in ground balls, 14-10. Shannon Bremer had nine saves in goal for UMW, while Hannah Wiltshire and Eliot Gilbert combined for three saves for W&L.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Shenandoah University at 3:30 p.m.
