The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the game en route to a 9-6 victory at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. Both team move to 8-4 on the season.

Senior Kate Smucker started the Eagle offense, scoring on a free position shot with 24:44 left in the first, and again at 22:39 on an Emily Mott assist. Sabrina Elliott scored with 20:55 remaining, and Holly Hudson upped the advantage to 4-0 at the 18:56 mark.

The Captains responded with the next two goals, but Elliott capped the first half scoring, scoring unassisted with 2:02 to go. The score stood at 5-2 at intermission.

After the Captains opened the second half scoring, Mott scored on a man up opportunity with 15:45 remaining, and Elliott scored once more with 15:11 left, giving the Eagles a 7-3 lead. CNU scored twice to draw within two goals, but the Eagles put the game away with goals from Kelsey Vincent with 3:46 left, and another from Hudson with 1:48 remaining.

Elliott led UMW with three goals, while Smucker and Hudson added two each. CNU led in shots, 22-19, as well as in ground balls, 14-13. The Captains gained 12 of 17 draw controls. Hanna Ashby had nine saves in goal for the Eagles.

UMW will return to action on Saturday when they host Southern Virginia University at 1 p.m. in another CAC contest.
