#17 UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at #12 Messiah, 7-6, on Saturday Afternoon

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 7-6 decision at 12th ranked Messiah College on Saturday to fall to 3-2 on the season. 

The Falcons jumped on top first, scoring just over five minutes into play, but the Eagles tied the score at one on a Sabrina Elliott free position goal with 22:10 left in the half. Messiah would score the next two tallies, but UMW cut the deficit to 3-2 on a Paige Haskins score on a Kate Smucker assist with 3:13 remaining. Messiah added a goal a minute later, and held a 4-2 edge at halftime.

In the second half, Haskins started the scoring 24 seconds in on a free position score. After a Falcon goal returned the margin to two, UMW responded with three straight.

Holly Hudson scored unassisted with 25:24 left, and Mackenzie Maguire followed two minutes later to knot the score. Julia Albert put the Eagles on top with 10:57 to play, but Messiah scored within the minute to once again tie the score, at 6-6.

The Falcons found the game winner with 4:28 left on a free position shot.

Messiah led in shots, 28-14, and in draw controls, 12-3. Hanna Ashby had nine saves in goal for UMW, and Elliott, Sarah Hampton, and Kirsten Littlefield each had four ground balls.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Guilford College at 3:30 p.m.
