#16 UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls to Washington & Lee, 5-4

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 5-4 decision to Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground Complex. The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season.

In the first half, the Generals found the net in the first minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles responded just 35 seconds later when Mackenzie Maguire found Sabrina Elliot to tie the game.

The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1, until Holly Hudson scored with 19:28 left in the first. The Eagles capped the scoring in the first half when Emily Mott found Kate Smucker with 11:39 left to go up 3-1.

In the second, the Generals scored in the first 30 seconds to cut the lead to one. Then at the 25:45 mark, W&L tied the game at 3-3.

The Generals took the lead with 20:18 left in the game, a lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the contest. Less than a minute later, the guests scored again to go up 5-3.

The Eagles responded when Elliot assisted Kelsey Vincent with 17:15 left in the game to cut the lead to 5-4. The Generals held the ball and worked the clock the rest of the half, limiting the Eagles' chances to tie the game.

Washington & Lee led in shots, 14-9, and in ground balls, 23-16. Hanna Ashby had seven saves in goal for the Eagles, while Hannah Wiltshire and Elliot Gilbert each had two saves in goal for the Generals.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they visit Shenandoah at 3:00pm.
